The campus of the Hong Kong University of
Science and Technology (HKUST) occupies a 60-hectare (150-acre) site
of sweeping
natural beauty on the Clear Water Bay peninsula in East Kowloon, less than
30 minutes' driving time from central Hong Kong.
Public transportation in Hong Kong is very efficient, and getting to and
from HKUST by taxi, the MTR metro, or bus is easy, as is accessibility by
car. Detailed information can be found here.
A free shuttle service between the workshop venue
(the University Center of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology)
and three ICPR hotels in the Wanchai area will be provided on August 17-19:
- Renaissance Harbour View: pick-up time 7.15 AM
- Novotel Century: pick-up time 7.20 AM
- Excelsior Hong Kong: pick-up time 7.25 AM
The shuttles will also take you back to these hotels in the evenings (at
around 7:45 PM on August 17, and 5:30 PM on August 19). On August 18, the
shuttles will take you to the banquet (also in the Wanchai area) and then
after the banquet, a shuttle will take those staying on the
campus back to HKUST.
Of course, workshop participants staying in the other hotels can also
take the shuttles. For locations of these hotels, please check
here.
Taxis
Taxis provide the simplest way to get to the University, and are easily
available at any MTR station, from hotels and most areas of Hong Kong.
Fares are comparatively low. Flag fall is HK$15 in Kowloon and on Hong
Kong Island, lower in the New Territories and Lantau Island. Taxis come
in different colours to indicate their area of service.
Red taxis operate in most of Hong Kong, except for Tung Chung Road
and the south side of Lantau Island;
Green taxis serve the rural areas of the New Territories; and
Blue taxis operate on Lantau Island.
All taxis can go to and from the Hong Kong International Airport.
More information can be found here.
Mass Transit Railway (MTR)
The Mass Transit Railway (MTR) is an underground subway (metro) system
serving Hong Kong island, Kowloon, and the airport.
It is the easiest way for visitors to get around Hong Kong. Tickets
can be purchased from machines in the stations on a trip-by-trip basis or
you can purchase multi-use Octopus
cards at MTR ticket windows.
For the added convenience, the MTR offers visitors a Tourist MTR 1-Day
Pass that costs HK$50. It allows unlimited travel on the MTR for 24
hours, but not the Airport Express. For longer stays, visitors can get
the Airport Express
Tourist Octopus 3-Day Pass that costs HK$220 or
HK$300. This pass allows one or two trips on the Airport Express and can
be used like a standard Octopus card on MTR for three days.
More information can be found here.
Buses
Bus routes, with double-decker and single-level buses, cover almost all of
Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories. Kowloon Motor Bus, and Citybus operate routes to cover Hong Kong Island,
Kowloon and the New Territories. Meanwhile, New Lantao Bus operates on
Lantau Island and Long Win Bus provides bus services to north Lantau and
the airport. Final destinations are prominently displayed in English and
Chinese on the front of the bus. Fares are low, and exact change is
required.
Minibuses
Minibuses are small passenger buses that carry about 16 people. Red
minibuses operate on routes that are not always fixed and passengers can
get on and off anywhere along the route except where special prohibitions
apply. Pay as you alight. The driver can provide change for small notes.
Green minibuses operate on specific routes at fixed prices. Exact payment
is required when getting on, octopus cards are accepted. Fares for
minibuses are a little higher than regular buses,
but minibuses are sometimes faster. Once filled, minibuses
won't stop until someone asks to get off. Please note that minibuses are
best suited for people who can speak some Cantonese and who are familiar
with Hong Kong.

The Kowloon-Canton Railway (KCR)
provides commuter train service from Kowloon through the New
